The post on the subreddit links to a YouTube video created by filmmaker Robert Meyer Burnett who breaks down the entire script in a video that stretches on for well over two hours. The leak comes by way of a thread on the Star Wars subreddit, r/StarWarsLeaks - which had accurate info on Rise of Skywalker months before its release. The leak makes clear that Trevorrow’s Episode IX was at least set to go in a very different direction.
Abrams’ Rise of Skywalker turned out to be a disappointment for many. Abrams would return to the Star Wars universe to direct Episode IX. Later that same year, Disney announced that J.J. Trevorrow was originally set to direct the final Skywalker Saga film, but left the project in 2017. They also sound like a nice time at the movies. My dream would be for Marvel to agree to publish my adaptation as a Legends version of Episode IX as Dark Horse Comics used to do, publishing The Star Wars (Rinzler & Mayhew), Star Wars: Infinities, and 2005’s Star Wars: Visionaries (where Darth Maul’s robotic legs were first introduced in a story by Aaron McBride).The Colin Trevorrow script for Star Wars: Episode IX has reportedly leaked online, and with multiple outlets having independently verified the story beats, the details sound legitimate. As such, multiple iterations of stories should be able to exist alongside each other. I have compiled a list of similarities between the two.
Furthermore, TROS is essentially an adaptation of DOTF, so much so that the WGA forced Lucasfilm to give Trevorrow & Connolly story credit for TROS. It is not canon and yet it not fan-fiction either, for it was the Episode IX set to be filmed for almost a year (Sept 2017, when Trevorrow left the project). DOTF is such an interesting piece of Star Wars lore. My biggest issue with TROS is that all of Rey's agency was completely taken away, both as a character (she’s now only important because of who she’s descended from) and as a woman (she no longer has her own power, she has “his power”). My hope is that seeing the script visually in my FREE webcomic adaptation will help people know what could/should have been. Having read DOTF I can state that I enjoy it much more than TROS. I was thrilled that Colin Trevorrow & Derek Connolly’s Duel of the Fates leaked, both the script and amazing pre-production artwork (see HERE & HERE), which I incorporate into my adaptation. Like many fans, I was disappointed with The Rise of Skywalker, a retread of Return of the Jedi that didn’t seem to follow the trajectory of the story set up in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.
